Question by Heron By The Sea: What is meant by the “Hatha Yoga Pradipika of Svatmarama”?
What’s “pradipika”? Who is Svatmarama?

Best answer:

Answer by Adyghe1985
The Hatha yoga pradipika of Svatmarama is one of the most important yoga texts, and Hans-Ulrich Rieker’s translation and commentary have long been valuable to yoga students as a complement to their practice and study.
Hatha yoga, or hatha vidya (the science of hatha yoga) is commonly misunderstood and misrepresented as being simply a physical culture, divorced from spiritual goals. Hans-Ulrich Rieker shows the error of this idea by explaining the changes which take place, through the practice of hatha yoga, in the practitioner’s body, mind and self. He makes the reader aware of the subjective transformation that occurs as the consciousness penetrates inwards towards the Self, and as the Self diffuses outwards. He shows that hatha yoga is not just physical exercise, but an integrated science leading towards spiritual evolution.
We are caught up in emotions like lust (kama), anger (krodha), greed (lobha), infatuation (moha), pride (ynadha) and malice (matsarya). Hatha yoga helps us to overcome these obstacles and hindrances to spiritual development. It is a biochemical, psycho-physiological and psycho-spiritual science which deals with the moral, mental, intellectual and spiritual aspects of man, as well as the physical and physiological. We can clarify our understanding of hatha yoga by first examining five important underlying concepts: mind, knowledge, aims of life, health and afflictions.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika

The Pradipika is divided into four parts. The first explains yamas (restraints on behaviour), niyamas (observances), asanas (posture) and food. The second describes pranayama (control or restraint of energy), and the shatkarmas (internal cleansing practices). The third deals with mudras (seals), bandhas (locks), the nadis (channels of energy through which prana flows) and the kundalini power. The fourth expounds pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and samadhi (absorption).

In all, the text contains 390 verses (floras). Out of these, about forty deal with asanas, approximately one hundred and ten with pranayama, one hundred and fifty with mudras, bandhas and Shatkarmas and the rest with pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi.

Swami Swatmarama (dates of birth and death are unknown) was a great exponent of Hatha Yoga and author of the famous Yogic text, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Little is known about him appart from this.

In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Swatmarama says only this that relates to himself:

” Yogin Swatmarama, after saluting his Guru Srinatha explains Hatha Yoga for the attainment of Raja Yoga.

Owing to the darkness arising from the multiplicity of opinions people are unable to know the Raja Yoga. Compassionate Swatmarama composes the Hatha Yoga Pradipika like a torch to dispel it.

Matsyendra, Goraksa, and so on, knew Hatha Vidya, and by their favour Yogi Swatmarama also learnt it from them.”

Question by mmagrandpa: How can I work up to the plow position? (Yoga)?
My build is short and thick. I have had some lower back problems that limit my flexibility in that region. For that reason, I find it impossible to get into the plow position. What type of exercises/stretches can I do to work my way up to being able to roll into the plow?

If it makes a difference, I don’t really ‘do’ yoga, but use it as a warm up/warm down from MMA and Jiu Jitsu workouts.

Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by ~Fishes~
lay on your back, and lift up your legs slightly. each time, lift higher. it strengthens your lower abdomens and helps you build up to doing the plow.

Hi,

My girlfriend does bikram yoga about 5 times a day. It is a hot yoga (room temperature ~40° C) where you sweat for 1:30 hrs. They recommend drinking a lot and drinking drinks with electrolytes if you do it more than 3 days a week.

I was wondering what some good drinks for her would be. She has been extremely thirsty and water isn’t cutting it. I suggested gatorade but is there anything else?

i have DDD @ L5-S1 ,since 7-8 yrs, i tried many Dr. but failed to get treated,i tried accupuncture, massage, yoga, accupressure, epidural inj.,physio but none has helped, pain may go for a day or two and it comes back, seating in vajra asana in a special chair gives me some relief, but thats not the solution,i do not want to go for major surgery, so pls suggest minimum invasive surgery if available,or some best way to manage the pain without medication.

Best answer:

Answer by katep1313
I have it as well. There is not much you can do outside of surgery and/or medication. A great deal of your pain is probably from arthritis you can soak in epsom salts, try a heating pad, buy a hand held massager to loosen knotted muscles, etc.. good luck.
